The Feast Day of the Holy Innocents

“In him (God, the Word) was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:4-5)

Today is the Feast of the Holy Innocents, and we recall the innocent children slaughtered by King Herod, in his effort to destroy the Messiah King. He killed the innocents out of fear. He killed them because he imagined an innocent baby to be a threat to his lifestyle.

“A voice was heard in Ra’mah

Wailing and loud lamentation,

Rachel weeping for her children;

she refused to be consoled

because they were no more.”

(Jeremiah 31:15)

Alas, even today we try to destroy the innocent babes who are created in the image of God. 54 million innocents in our nation have been destroyed through abortion because of a perceived or imagined threat. The only difference is that King Herod is many in our nation; it is not one paranoid man who takes life, but many citizens, legislators and doctors in our nation. Oh, if they could but open their eyes to God’s supremacy and the dignity of human life from conception! Truth is not a matter of individual opinion.
