And Jesus, looking upon him, loved him.
- Mark 10:21.
In my book of virtues, which was my companion during my childhood and is now a counselor for my adulthood, there is a story to which I always go back, as if my fingers remember the texture of the page and flip it open willingly. The heroine of the story is a small girl who reminds her father, a thief, of this truth: ” Someone’s watching you from heaven!”
Indeed, someone has been watching us from heaven since the beginning of time. His gaze is as bright as the sun and has the feathered touch of the morning breeze. It softens the heart and soothes the hardness of each day. It is His gaze, pools of palpitating love, that brings up my heart each morning so that it can beat with His.
When I let those eyes penetrate me as if they were laser beams as white at the purest of skies, everything shifts and sharpens before my soul. The world is not an empty, senseless game if I look at it with those eyes inside my chest. The world is revealed in all its luminosity and beauty, the chirping of the birds become eulogies of love, and the river’s soothing movement is but a reflection of His eyes.
Before His eyes I am ashamed no longer. All of my imperfections are weightless because the soft sweetness in His pupils becomes a veil covering my wounds. My heart is cleansed with the purity that emanates from those eyes. By His eyes my soul is made new.
Before His eyes I become, for Him, the one I was meant to be. The creature that laughs at the morning sun and kneels in the grass so that she can taste the fragrance of nature, the woman that wishes to become His living will, His hands and feet, to bring comfort to those who still thirst for love, those who are hungry for tenderness. The soul that lives to bring comfort to His heart, beginning and end of all sweetness.
Those eyes became my sun, the headlights in the winding road. As soon as I understood – and what can be more enlightening than the truth? – that it is Him I love and need, the curtain disclosed the lovely reality of his presence in my veins, within me. He has chosen to guard each of my steps, as the mother with her toddler, so that I can run safely into His arms after I finish the road of life.
